Sky+ Remote Record

Sky have finally announced its new service that people have heard about for a while now. If you have a cell phone and it has reception, you can text your Sky+ box at home to record whatever you want. The new service called Remote Record will allow people who at stuck at work, in traffic or just out late to record any TV show they do not want to miss.

Obviously you have to have a compatible cell phone and from the looks of the picture on the right, some cell phone can even deliver you the TV guide. A cell phone with 2.5G, 3G or GPRS who have downloaded the Sky by mobile application can view Sky's 7-day TV guide on their phone and select programs to record on their Sky+ box. There is no charge to use this part of the service other than the phone operator's data charge for using the 2.5G, 3G or GPRS services.

The Sky+ text message version works with any UK-based mobile phone, users send a short message such as The Simpsons. Sky 1. 11/06. 18:30. to the dedicated "Remote Record" number 61759. Sky then automatically searches the TV listings and if a match is found a message is sent to the customers Sky+ box. To use Remote Record you need an active Sky+ subscription. Up to eight mobiles can be registered on one box. However mobile phones cannot be registered on multiple boxes. Texts cost 25 pound.

There are no breakthrough technology here, but the usefulness of this new service deserve a mention. Too bad I rarely watch TV.
