Free Cell Phone Calls

Taiwan wants to make cell phone calls as cheap as possible, free! They plan to achieve this by getting more phones with wifi capabilities and then use VoIP to make phone calls. The mayor want to start with the city of Taipei and then move towards adopting VoIP on a grand scale.

The government and the user associations are asking the general public to choose phones which can use Wi-Fi. Since the city has several hotspots and more are being added continuously, such cell phones can make use of the much cheaper VoIP method to make calls rather than the traditional GSM / CDMA methods that we use.

If this is successful, it would be the world's first internet phone system using the whole city, rather than a spot, as a wireless operation environment said a spokesman for the Taipei Computer Association.
The initiative also involves switching schools and government offices from the traditional phone network to one using internet phones, known as Voice over Internet Protocol (Voip).

This not only saves the consumer money but also benefits schools too, because by the end of August, hundreds of schools will be installed with an internet telephony system and 400,000 school children, parents and teachers will be encouraged to use the new system. The money save from cheaper phone bill will provide better meals for students, said the mayor of the city, Ma Ying-jeou. I cannot wait till this idea is adopted worldwide!
